Smartphones account for 75 percent of all mobile phones in the U.S. It’s no surprise that companies who want to stay ahead of the mobile curve need to be prepared for Google’s upcoming “mobile-friendly” algorithms updates, also known as ‘Mobilegeddon’.

According to a recent Google blog post, Google will be expanding their use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal starting April 21, 2015. Google states: “This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results. Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices.”

This update is not just small refresh. Zineb Ait Bahajji from Google’s Webmaster Trends team was quoted saying at SMX Munich last month that the new update will have a greater impact on search results than did Google’s Panda or Penguin updates.

Not sure if your site is mobile ready? Don’t panic. If you’re unsure whether or not your company’s site needs to make updates, Google has provided a great “mobile-friendly” tool:

Go to:

Enter your organization’s url and click “Analyze”.

Your mobile-friendliness analysis will appear.

Google has also provided a guide to get you started on the mobile-friendly path. In addition, here are some mobile-friendly tips from Google stating that a “mobile-friendly” page:

  • Avoids software that is not common on mobile devices, like Flash
  • Uses text that is readable without zooming
  • Sizes content to the screen so users don’t have to scroll horizontally or zoom
  • Places links far enough apart so that the correct one can be easily tapped

Staying ahead of the curve with mobile marketing can help grow your business, meaningfully engage more customers and increase brand awareness.
