Why Telling Your Association's Story is Important

Storytelling dates back to over 27,000 years ago with ancient prehistoric drawings and paintings on cave walls.

Our brains are wired for storytelling. According to Uri Hasson from Princeton, a story is the only way to activate parts in the brain so that a listener turns the story into their own idea and experience. In fact, Jeremy Tsu found, “Personal stories and gossip make up 65% of our conversations.”

Asim Shaikh knew he would be moving from Pakistan to America more than a year ago, before his son went to high school.
He knew he wanted his son to attend Stone Bridge High School in Ashburn.
“I just liked the school. It had great rankings,” said Shaikh.
So the serial entrepreneur began looking for business he might be interested in buying near Ashburn.
He found Communicate By Design, a decades-old design firm in Sterling, which the owners were hoping to sell.
He used money he had made from a successful text alert system he operated in India and Pakistan to buy the firm.
Even though he had no design experience, he had plenty of business experience.
After a stint at Bowling Green State University, Shaikh moved back to Pakistan and worked for a Compac dealership. He did well in that role, and became a regional manager at age 23.
At 25, he started his own company, which he says didn’t do well. Eventually Shaikh landed at AIG, and later as the head of marketing for Allianz in Pakistan.

Finding the X-factor

The end of summer always makes us a little nostalgic and reflective. Golden sunlight, comfy sweaters, and long waits for pumpkin-spice lattes…This year, we have quite a bit to reflect on. Our new rebrand was the result of some serious navel-gazing this summer. We felt we needed to describe ourselves differently because we had changed so much.

More than 20 years ago, CBD started as a company with a solitary graphic designer. By 2006, that had doubled, and then it doubled again, and then took off exponentially. Today we have a posse of designers, web developers, social media specialists, writers and strategists (it’s getting kind of crowded over here, in fact).
